Two Alaska realities: (1) SIXT doesn't operate in Alaska — rent an SUV from Enterprise / National / Alamo, or Alaska 4×4 for a proper adventure rig, at ANC (book 2–3 months out). (2) Denali's Park Road is closed at Mile 43 all of summer 2026 (Pretty Rocks landslide repair) — Eielson & Wonder Lake are unreachable — which is exactly why the Kenai loop is the smarter 2026 trip.

A · Kenai Peninsula Loop

Girdwood → Seward → Homer, round-trip ANC. Least driving, richest wildlife, best stylish lodging, and unaffected by the Denali closure. 7–9 nights.

Option B

Anchorage → Talkeetna → Denali

The big-mountain route — but the 2026 Park Road closure at Mile 43 guts the deep-park bus experience. Better in 2027. 5–7 nights.

Option C

Grand Loop (Kenai + Denali)

Everything, but driving-heavy and tight at 10 days — really wants 11–12. And Denali is still limited in 2026.

Getting around

Fly LAX ⇄ Anchorage (Alaska Airlines nonstop, ~5h40). Rent an SUV at ANC — SIXT isn't in Alaska; use Enterprise/National/Alamo or Alaska 4×4.

August notes

17–18 hrs of daylight early month; salmon runs peak (great bear & eagle viewing); wettest stretch starts late August on the coast — pack layers. Book cruise + lodging 2–3 months ahead.
